I am a single mother who is currently a public school teacher and I am very unhappy in said career. Long story short, I wanted to change degrees during my senior year of college and my ex-husband, in his infinite wisdom, disagreed with my doing so. Recently, after taking career inventories through my career services department at my university I have narrowed my desired degree to two options, either a degree in Human Resources or Public Administration.

With all of this stated, there appears to be a ton of money availible to those with little or no education but I can't manage to find anything for those who seek to obtain a masters degree or beyond. While I can appreciate that I make above minimum wage, I am by no means wealthy. Any suggestions of where to find graduate scholarships?

I would like to add a comment to some of the previous recommendations not to just attain a degree in education simply to obtain a grant; you may end up in a profession you dislike with a degree that does not easily translate into other career fields. In addition, those grants require you to spend a considerable amount of time teaching in less than desireable schools and if you don't complete that given amount of time teaching you may have to pay that "free" money back. Having taught in innercity schools, I can tell you from experience, there is a reason teachers don't readily teach in those areas. Lack of materials, lack of parental and administrative support, and unsanitary conditions are just the beginning of the list of reasons you don't want to teach in those schools. Just a word of caution and insight. I did manage to get some of my student loans forgiven from the time I spent in lower economic schools and I did meet some awesome students, teachers, and parents but it is definately not for the faint of heart! Make sure this is something you really desire to do; not just something you decide to do in order to get some help financially for a college education.

I am a single parent trying to go back to school. I hold a full-time shift-work job and raise my 5 year old, run to her activities, and try to attend the ONLY school around here that offers my major (which is 2 hours away, mind you). I can't go part-time at work because I will loose my benefits (401K, insurance for my daughter and myself, etc). Even if I would attempt to go part-time, I would gross JUST over the max of any state assistance (food stamps, medicaid for my daughter, etc) and leave myself with NO kind of insurance. I have about $10k in student loans already and figure if I take 4 classes per semester, I only have 4 semesters (or 2 years) left to complete my BS. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen because the last semester I attended college, I had to pay EVERYTHING out of pocket until I got my financial aid-the last month of the semester. I have researched online for single parent grants/scholarships but am unable to find one for my age 22-26, white, in my state, and not a first time freshman. When I say I have researched, I'm talking about sitting on the computer for HOURS at a time, and I have still come up with NOTHING, other than the FAFSA, of course. If anyone knows where I may locate some kind of assistance, that would be great.

I am an associate degree instructor at a proprietary school and in the process of tracking down grants and scholarships for our students. If you have any suggestions of websites I can look at, I would greatly apprecitate it. Most of our students are hispanic and single mothers.

Hello,
I am also a single mother and looking for grants. But I have a problem that I have not seen mentioned here. As I already have my Associate's Degree and began working towards my Bachelor's degree, I went to two private institutions that ate up all of my "governmental limit" as far as receiving funds (at the undergrad level - - if you guys know anything about this). So I am in DESPERATE need of any and all GRANTS for single mothers and otherwise that anyone may know about. ANY help will be much appreciated as I only have 40 more credits to go in order to obtain my Bachelor's degree.

Thanking you in Advance,

T. Kelley
